About the Author

Tamara is positively personified, unequivocally frank and a self-confessed chatterbox who oozes wit, charm and intelligence. A 30-something from London, she is a dedicated entrepreneur and mother to four lively children. But this has not always been the case because Tamara has been faced with, and has overcome, her fair share of challenging situations which have at times had paralysing emotional effects. The result; Tamara suffered from depression for some years as a young adult but her determination and positivity won through and she successfully pulled herself of it. She now wants to share the self-taught art of being happy with others as she truly believes that everyone can achieve this state of being and the even better news is that it’s easier than everyone thinks. Interview: Tamara and ‘The Happy Diet’

Tell us, what is your book all about? 

The Happy Diet focuses on the readers well being. It’s all about making your life easier and more enjoyable to live. Over a period of 4 weeks it introduces the reader to all sorts of life changing practices and new habits that will help them quickly achieve optimum happiness. 

What sort of things?

I have tried to include all the things that will truly benefit the reader and their life. Some are predictable such as meditation and yoga, and some are more controversial like TV bans and social media restrictions.

Can we ask what qualifies you to write a book on happiness?

Well I used to be very UNhappy. Like absolutely miserable. So I know what it feels like to feel helpless and feel like you don’t want to live OR what to do to make any of it better. I also know what it takes to drag yourself out of a hole. When I eventually came out of my darkness, I realised I wanted to help make sure other people didn’t have to go through what I went through and wait so long for their own happiness. My own personal growth journey was a long one and the healing process I went through took so much time, however at the end I realised it was all quite simple. And that’s what this book is about, it’s about helping people who are in the darkness to find their light in the simplest of ways. Happiness is a choice, and one that a lot of people don’t realise they can make.

Can we ask what made you so unhappy?

I think it was a combination of things. My mother had me at a very young age and chose to raise me without my biological father. I did have a man I call dad that raised me from the age of 2, but I think subconsciously without realising I always felt very unloved and like there was something wrong with me when I was a child. Then at the age of 14 before I had the chance to lose my virginity, I was raped and had not only the opportunity to lose it taken away from me, I also nearly lost my mind. Many factors surrounding the incident left me understandably devastated but because I didn’t know how to cope or what to do after it happened I just acted like it didn’t happen and then I quietly spiralled. After many years of trying to mask the pain I felt and jumping from man to man in a weird bid to get my sexual power back, I eventually fell pregnant at the age of 19. Whilst I was carrying my son, my dad remarried and had another baby, my brother Tate. He died shortly after being born when I was about 6 months pregnant and after I had my son, at around the age of 22 I hit rock bottom. I remember the day I called my counsellor because I wanted to kill myself and wanted him to help me get care for my son so he wouldn’t be alone. He made me read The Secret and the day I read that book was the day my life changed forever. Life finally made sense to me and as hard as it was to admit at the time, I realised I had made my life as bad as it was. So I owe my life to that book and even though now I am a single mother to 4 amazing children and I am probably in the most mentally and physically demanding time of my life-I am so SO happy and I put that all down to my way of living since realising that I have the power to co-create my life. The Happy Diet is how I learned to live happily and what I want to share with the world.

That is a lot to go through. You call yourself NOT Dr. Tamara, do you have any qualifications? Are you a real doctor?

No (laughs) hence the name. I am NOT a doctor, I have no desire to be one and I definitely do not give your normal health advice. I think that the best qualifications I ever could of had was simply surviving life itself. Having lived through many different challenges myself over the years, I am obviously experienced in many things. And that’s what I think a lot of therapists and doctors are lacking-real life experience. There isn’t much I haven’t been through either personally or with a friend or family member. Life has thrown me a lot and not only am I still smiling, I am able to use my experiences to help others.

You have been through a lot, but can we ask if anything else inspired you to write this book? 

That’s a big question, with many answers and some of them may seem weird (laughs). I have always felt like I was sent here to help humanity in some way. The state of the planet has saddened me since I was a child and I have always felt a deep sense of needing to help others feel happy. I have always tried to do good deeds and help who I can locally BUT have always wished I could do a lot more to help people globally. As you know, over the last ten years I have been forced to find happiness the hard way, but through the process I have discovered many wise and wonderful things and just how easy it really all is. I had never been sure how I could use any of it to really help people and that’s when the idea of the book came. The book is not only a way to reach more people and spread happiness, but it will also give me an income that will allow me to positively impact a lot more people in the future. 

Who inspired you to write this book?

That’s another big question with many answers. Who inspired me the most however, was without a doubt, Rhonda Byrne. She is the author of The Secret, a book that I give credit to for saving my life. She was who showed me that my whole life was my own creation and that the power to change it lied in my own mind. When I think about, it if it was not for her and that book I would not be here now and I would of never written this book. I guess it takes a life changing book to inspire someone to write a life changing book (laughs). 

How long did it take you to write the book?

Ah that’s another weird answer (laughs). I actually had written another book all about the woes of the world and the night I sat down to edit it, I realised how depressing the book was. I suddenly hated it and wanted to write something that would actually help people. That night was a full moon and I sat on my sofa in its light and wrote the whole book. Now bare in mind the book is only 40 pages and its taken months of designing and editing but the book itself was written in one night.

One night! That is crazy but can we ask why it is only 40 pages? Is that normal for a book?

No it certainly isn’t, but this is not a normal book, I am not a normal person and this is not normal advice. We live in a time now where everything is so fast paced and everyone wants everything right ‘now’. We are also living in a time of heightened consciousness. People want answers and they want them fast. This is where ‘The Happy Diet’ comes in, the book is like every self help book ever written, all wrapped into one manageable , easy-to-read guide. You might be able to read it in an hour, but it will change your life forever.

This really does sound like a life changing book. What books do you read?

I enjoy anything that expands my mind. I especially like anything esoteric. I am currently reading 3 books, one all about how to read facial expressions as emotions title ‘Emotions Revealed’ one called ‘Drunk Tank Pink’ all about how the inside of our funny brain works and the final one is ‘Quadrivium’ that covers the 4 liberal arts. I have to admit to not understanding much of the 3rd one but reading it is beneficial regardless so I will power through.

Do you have any plans for a follow up? 

Well once i’ve sold a million copies of The Happy Diet I would like to write another bite sized book for homeless people. I think feeding homeless people is amazing, but I prefer to look for a long term solution and I thought if I could write a book that contains all the knowledge you would need to get yourself off of the streets, then it would offer a proper solution to the dreadful problem that is homelessness.

That sounds exciting we shall look out for that. Have you written anything else? 

I write many things on my website www.notdrtamara.com and you can find articles there on everything from tips on how to use the moon to affect your hair growth to how to meditate with your children. I also vlog daily on my @notdrtamara page on instagram and I do a weekly live chat show called ‘The Happy Hour’  on www.autonomousmedia.net

What are your plans for the future?

Eventually I hope I can achieve world domination and force everyone into a giant group hug BUT until then I am concentrating on spreading happiness as far and as wide as I can.
